About

Our Programmes

GAME is the largest department of Gotland University and the oldest game education in Scandinavia. We offer several programs in game and film production:

They all span three years, but GAME also offers an elective fourth year; two courses in International Game Production Studies (60 ECTS each) that consecutively form a Masters degree. All our programmes are open to international students, but only IGPS is entirely distance based.

All year round we offer netbased courses at the undergraduate levels: Music- & Sound FX for games, AI Development, 3D Modelling & ZBrush, Level design and more.

Education

Our facilities are equipped with modern technology to ensure high quality student work. We provide the campus students with computers, office spaces and a Motion Capture studio. We also provide our students with production software such as Autodesk 3D Studio Max, Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Visual Studio for asset production and programming.

Ours is a profoundly project-oriented environment, with students working together to create actual games (digital and physical) every semester. Our skilled teachers aim at providing the students with a deep knowledge of the practical appliances of graphics, sound and programming within the field of modern game- and film production.

We work very hard to keep our staff educated, updated and in contact with the industry. Over the years we’ve built a strong reputation and a massive international network, enabling us to invite guest lecturers from all over the world on a regular basis. Furthermore – several of our staff are also actively working in the industry.

Gotland Game Awards

During the three years, students display their games to a panel of judges from the industry at the Gotland Game Awards; an annual event with all the students from GAME publicly showing and competing with what they have worked on throughout the year. Industry sponsored prices in excess of €40 000 are handed out to the best entries in more than twelve different categories.

In June of 2009, more than 400 participants from GAME and partnership universities competed for the prizes. The event had some 1500 people attending, playing games and partying with us.

The jury included over 25 international members of the game- and computer graphics industry, aiming to develop new forms of cooperation, internships and business possibilities.

Location and Accomodation

Located in the World Heritage city of Visby, this modern university is naturally enhanced by the rich historical and cultural atmosphere of Gotland – a unique island just off the east coast of Sweden.

Gotland is the largest island in the Baltic Sea and the sunniest province of Sweden, sporting long summers and mild autums and winters. Roughly 65 000 people lives here, and almost a third of the population lives in the city of Visby – a modern community in glorious natural surroundings, keeping it’s rich history alive through the extensive medieval remains on the island. The gotlanders (gutar) are quite used to international visitors and are – like all swedes – fluent english speakers.

Student apartments are plentiful and comes fully equipped; furniture, heating, cable TV and very fast internet connection are commonly included in the rent. For more info on living and studying in Sweden, check out Study In Sweden! For help finding a place to live see Rindi – the student union!

Oh, and GAME is not an acronym. :)
