Hourences is visiting us next week for a week long workshop in the UDK! The workshop is reserved for SIM2 programmers and graphics, as a part of your Level Design course.

Goals for the week:
-Fully playable level in general
-Has some kind of gameplay valuable (needs a layout – not just a flat space…)
-Supports bots, and has weapons and such
-Actually resembles something (a building or landscape – not simply a bunch of cubic shapes)
-Needs at least one door and one elevator, and two scripted events.
-Needs to have a sky visible, with sunlighting.
-Needs at least one self-made particle system
-Needs at least one self-made material
-Needs to make use of both Meshes and Brushes.
-Needs at least one pool of water/lava/some other liquid

Teachers Teaching Teachers has sprung from some of the ancient social habits of the GAME-staff. For as long as anyone care to remember we’ve had this tradition where we get together every now and then, on weekends or lecture free days, to talk about whatever we know and anyone was interested to hear. It’s been an informal way to share our expertise with each other.

… or perhaps more like a bunch of teachers hanging out and showing off.

Over the years we’ve taught each other game design, programming, various software tools, talked about modern game research etc etc. All interresting stuff and over time these informal workshops and presentations have turned into a seriously important way for all of us to keep up-to-date and gain new insights.

Today this ancient habit of ours is made public and opened to a wider audience. We call it Teachers Teaching Teachers and from now on we invite all staff at the university to join in!

GAME’s motion capture studio covers 35m² and is theoretically capable of tracking any number of actors and props simultaneously! Here’s some photos from when Andreas Wahlman (our in-house mocap expert) first tried out multi-capping in our studio. First year students Ragnar, Jonas and Stina volunteered to assist with the swinging of swords, throwing punches and pushing each other off high cliffs.

Gotlands Allehanda: “Japanska spelforskare bygger nätverk på ön” (machine translation)

Prof. Akihiko Shirai teaching Processing and WiiMedia

Oh yes. The creator of WiiMedia and professor of interaction technology – Akihiko Shirai – quickly whipped our programmers into shape with Processing and let them loose with the Wiimotes.

He divided them into small teams of three to four students (each given a specific role) and – in just three short days – we saw them produce a pancake-frying simulation, darts, horse racing, space shooters, a classic artillery game and more.

The “winning” team (by votes among all participants) created a dueling game of spellcasting in a classic western setting, and were awarded Prof. Shirai’s personal blue Wiimote.
